SSHM Initiatives Especially For Students

Student Bursaries

The Society offers bursaries for bona fide students to assist them in meeting the financial costs of attending the Society’s own and relevant other conferences, up to a maximum of one per student per calendar year. This note outlines the conditions under which they are offered. Bursaries are awarded at the discretion of the treasurer, and the budget for bursaries is limited, so please enquire early.

Roy Porter Essay Prize

This prize is awarded to the best original, unpublished essay in the social history of medicine submitted to the annual competition, as judged by the SSHM's assessment panel. It is named in honour of the late Professor Roy Porter, a great teacher and a generous scholar.

Conferences

The Society regularly sponsors conferences intended for postgraduate students and early career researchers, which have been organized by postgraduates. The conference in 2010 will be held at the University of Durham (6-7 July) on the theme of "The Body on Display, from Renaissance to Enlightenment".
